Tinkerbell

Andreas Dejas has been posting a LOT of art at his new blog. Mostly it consists of Classic Disney works. He recently posted Marc Davis' Tinkerbell designs. It's great to see original art like this, with the construction lines still visible. You can learn a lot about how a character is constructed by looking beneath the surface and breaking it down to it's core shapes.
Here's my attempt at Tinkerbell based off one of Marc's drawings... she is NOT easy to draw... I had fun with this little exercise!

I need to keep it up!
He still needs a little work, I like his concept and I'll probably re-design him at some point, but for now he exists!

So I'm finally getting around to polishing up an old 2 Character Dialogue Test.
I've pretty much thrown out the original performance of the 2nd character and in the process of reworking her acting. But I always liked what I had done with the first character so I've gone in and polished up the first shot of the test.
I'm moving on to the harder task of re-animating the next 3 shots!!!

So my New Year's Resolution was to do one sketch a day and one illustration a week, and then post it here to catalog everything!
Needless to say I am failing miserably!
While I have been sketching (ALMOST) everyday, I haven't been posting anything at all! I'm going to try and get better at that!

So for now, here is a drawing I did of Ariel. I found some great advice from this blog: Rads How To on how to get better at drawing by breaking down a shot from classic Disney films.

I decided to tackle this pose of Ariel since I always seem to have difficulty drawing subtle things!
Here's the process I used!

First I broke down the pose to its basic elements.

Then I added the more to the form with sharper lines.

Added in her hair.

Did some light tone to give a little more form.

And then I just darkened the empty space around her just to make it pop a little. Although there are some proportional issues I'm fairly happy with the end result!

Here's the progress on my hotdog sculpture!

I started refining the blocked out shapes of the bun lips and eyes.
I made couple of eyeballs and baked them. I'll put place those inside the eye sockets toninght and start blocking in the eyebrows. Maybe I'll start adding the feet as well. I need to secure the sculpture to the wood base. I'm finding that the more I handle it the more I ruin the work I just did!!!

It's coming along, but VERY slowly... I'm learning a whole lot about being patient and sticking things through! I always want immediate results, and this is a good way to try and diminish that expectation!

Sculpture Adventure!

So I've decided to try my hand at sculpting! I haven't done any sculptures since I was in High School and I can't really say that what I was doing back then was done very well! I was a little more into drawing in those days! So I took one of the characters we've created over at SpeakeasyFX and decided to make a maquette of him! I've basically taken a look at the techniques of some other "full time" scluptors to use as my guideline! I have no idea what I'm doing, but it's a learning experience!!!

After posing him out I start to frame out the armature. This will be the main "skeleton" to build up the clay on. I traced the center line of the character and bent wire to fit. The wire extends beyond the feet so that they can be attached to a wooden base later.
I then wrap the multiple sections of wire together with some smaller wire...
Note: I'm slightly worried that his arms are so thin that they won't be able to hold up his hand straight out, like I had originally posed out. I've played around with a couple alternative hand poses and decided to just place his hand on his hip. I may revisit this original pose later, but for now I'm taking the easier road. Since this is my first foray into this medium I don't want to get too crazy...YET! Here's the new pose.

Here is the armature fully fastened together with wire. I have also drilled two small holes in the wood base and placed the wires

I used plumbers putty to bond the weaker parts (Shoulders, Hips and Hand on Axe) of the armature together. I then begin to wrap the entire skeleton up using aluminum foil wrap. This will bulk out the entire sculpture so I use less Sculpey, and also so it will bake a little more evenly. This is the most tedious part so far, just slowly wrapping and gluing small strips of aluminum. Also the Sculpey will have something to cling to as it's applied to the skeleton, I also started to wrap the arms and legs, since they are so thin, in smaller wire for the same reason

So after getting everything bulked up I started to place the Sculpey. I mixed soft and firm Sculpey together (which took forever by hand... now I know why people use pasta mixers!) Now I've got most of the basic form mapped out, but still very rough...

Hotdog 'n' Hamburger

So over at SpeakeasyFX we are creating short films starring our latest creations - Hotdog and Hamburger! This has been an absolutely amazing project to work on. Overall (so far) this has been a completely collaborative effort with everyone related to the studio having a say in every aspect of the film-making process from the initial concept, to design, story, animation, editing, music, sound FX... you name it, we have a voice in it. It has really lett us sharpen our skills in all areas of film making, or just in parts that we as individuals want to take the time to focus on.

Here are the first two episodes we have finished, Episode 3 should be out shortly!
Hopefully you all have as much fun watching these episodes as we all did creating them!

So I recently took a trip to Walt Disney World with the ENTIRE family! YIKES! I managed to sneak away for half a day to the Animal Kingdom and do some quick gesture drawings of some of the animals they have on site. Animals are tough subjects tho, they just DON'T want to sit still! But I guess it's a good thing since I need to get quicker at my sketches!

Here's what I did! There's still definitely room for some improvement here, but that's what it's all about right!?

So like I said... I wanted to start using this blog for posting my artwork, and I'm finally starting to! I made a new years resolution to do at least 1 sketch a day and write 1 new song a week for 2010. So far I am 3 sketches behind, but have 4 more days to write a song! I'll try and post my new music on here as soon as I figure out how! Instead of typing this I should be drawing my three sketches... off to work!

I recently took a trip out to Columbus Ohio to visit (at the time) a special lady friend of mine... and now my girlfriend Cori.
We pretty much spent most of the weekend driving around with her singing along to the radio and me just quietly listening!
I didn't take many photos that weekend, actually almost none at all, but this pretty much sums up the experience I had!

Thanks to my good friend Cesar Tafoya for all his feedback and support as I stumble my way back into the world of Photoshop!
